The American Heart Association published a study Menopause Transition and Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Early Prevention. The study showed that during menopause, bad cholesterol drastically increases; however, in women who begin hormone therapy early in menopause - that would be the peri-menopausal stage - there is a cardiovascular benefit to being on hormone therapy. The study cited a 50% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease.
