The body is meant to burn fat for energy, not sugar. We have become so dependent on simple carbs and sugars that we put all our fat burning pathways in dormancy. When you do this, you also shut down the pathways that keep us well.
 
When you eat something your immune system in your gut can't deal with, it releases a protein called zonulin which opens the tight junctions in the gut that drives inflammation. This is known as Leaky Gut.
 
Low grade inflammation forces the thyroid to go out of balance because it has to put the breaks on other systems and organs because the immune system is taking so much energy. As the body is fighting gluten or other inflammation or food offender, it is also fighting the thyroid and that is the autoimmune connection.
